In the Latin quarter, the very heart of Paris, between Saint-Germain-des-Pres, the Sorbonne, Notre-Dame and the Luxembourg gardens, the Hotel Saint-Paul is an attractive 17th-century residence which used to be a monastery. The Franciscan monks lived here in the past.

Its oak beams and stone walls are combined with Haute-Epoque furniture and an English decor to provide a welcoming atmosphere. The lobby is stylish in an unfussy way with beamed ceilings, a mixture of stone and colour-washed walls, good country antiques. Sputnik, the house cat, spends most of his time in the comfortable armchairs of the cosy lounge, close to the old piano.

Facing the entrance, a courtyard garden is set behind a glass wall , carefully tended and full of colours year-around. The cellar breakfast room is a particularly elegant variation on the theme, with high-backed tapestry chairs and round wooden tables.

The 31 bedrooms, all of which are differently decorated, with walls covered in grass cloth or enlivened with a dash of bright colour, are equipped with smart, carefully lit bathrooms clad in ginger or reddish marble. They face either rue Monsieur le Prince, with sound proofed windows or the courtyard of the Lycee Saint-Louis. Rooms vary in size and ceiling: the lower your floor, the higher your ceiling. Some of the Saint-Paul window boxes grow herbs and tomatoes as well as flowers.

The attic rooms are cosy, with views over the roof-tops; others have four-posters or antique wooden bedsteads. Most are air-conditioned; all have a mini-bar, a safety box, TV Satellite, hair-dryer and modem plug. Even though you feel like breathing the old Paris, as part of King Philippe Auguste's vast city walls can be seen here, you will benefit of the newest technology: wireless internet connection.

The Luxembourg gardens vicinity and the so many walking distance sites make the hotel Saint-Paul a convenient pied-a -terre for enjoying the city. Most rooms have been recently renovated (February 2007). The hotel is smoke free since February 1st, 2007.
