Since its opening as both a hotel and a semi-architectural museum in October, 2002, the Commune has become a must-visit place in China and received over 200,000 visitors. It has become a showcase of contemporary Chinese and Asian architecture. It has been widely covered by both Chinese and international media as a momentous breakthrough in architectural history in Asia and has become an icon of new China.
Managed by Kempinski since August 2005, it is considered as SOHO China's most creative project. Set amid the mountains near the Shuiguan section of the Great Wall, the 8 square kilometer development is a private collection of contemporary architecture designed by 12 Asian architects and won an architectural special prize at the Biennale di Venezia in 2002
Eleven houses, ranging in size from 4 to 6 bedrooms, are dispersed along the valley and all frame views of the sinuous landscape and The Great Wall, accessible by a path on the property. Each villa has a different and exclusive interior design and retains a dedicated butler available 24/7 if required. 10 villas have four bedrooms and one has six bedrooms. Part en-suite bedrooms are available and some villas have an individual sauna.
The Club House serves multiple purposes and houses a courtyard restaurant, a lounge, a large multi-function hall, a gallery, a cinema and a library attired in peacock feathers. Local activities available: ski, ski-doo (Nov-March), horse riding, polo, golf, hiking. Private helicopter transfer available upon request. Private airport 15 minute drive away.
It is the only hotel from mainland China selected by Conde Nast Traveler as one of its100 Hot Hotels in the World in 2004 and was included in the Tatler Travel Guide, 2005 as one of "the 101 Best Hotels", ranked among the 10 best "Boutique" hotels.
